Great Time to Clarify Your Values
It’s always a good time to clarify your values.
I came across this article from Doug Fields last week. It’s just a quick word to encourage youth pastors to be intentional with their ministries. Putting your values in print is an essential step in galvanizing the purpose of youth ministry. Values are designed to allow everyone to understand what is important. What you value is what you will strive to attain.
Values also lead us to stating our goals for each ministry area. If you value community, then you will set goals to enhance relationships among the students in your ministry. This will ultimately be seen in how you program your youth ministry, i.e. create opportunities for building solid relationships in every direction–students to students, parents to students, leaders to students.
This might be a good time to schedule a whiteboard session with some of your leaders. Get together for a Saturday morning and go through the youth ministry calendar. Now, a morning will never be enough time to cover the whole year, but start by going through a regular week in your youth ministry. Start with Sunday and keep rolling. Stop at every program element and respond to this simple statement:
- “The reason we do this is because we think ________________ is important.”
Take a look at Doug’s encouragement, then invest some time in setting values for your youth ministry.
